High School:

Becoming the Architect of Your Own Future
Add one part architect and one part engineer and what do you get? Project Evolution! Regina High School student, Paula Gomez, learned much more about the technical challenges, the intellectual stimulation and the lure of muddy construction sites through participating in a group job shadow event coordinated by the Workplace Learning Connection on November 20, 2008.
Paula, along with 13 other students from 10 area high schools, obtained an insider’s view on careers in architecture and architectural engineering. Kelly Beckler from MMS Consultants and Josh Rechkemmer from Neumann Monson met with Paula and her fellow students. They looked at a number of projects and traced their evolution from sketches to refined computer models and were shown photographs of a range of completed projects, ending the day with a tour of Neumann Monson’s Tower Plaza office in Iowa City. Paula left the event with the knowledge of the educational, training, and examination requirements required to become a registered professional in either field.
